Year 2 Summer Term 1 Blog
Date: 22nd May 2026 @ 3:22pm
Dear Parents,
We cannot quite believe how quickly this half term has flown by! It has been such a busy, exciting and successful five weeks in Year 2, and we wanted to share some of the highlights with you.
One of our biggest highlights this half term was our trip to Skipton Castle in Week 1. The children had an amazing time exploring the castle, learning about its history and bringing our learning to life. Following the trip, the children produced some absolutely fantastic writing in English. We focused on recount writing based on our visit to Skipton Castle, and the progress the children have made was incredible to see. We were so proud of the detail, enthusiasm and creativity they showed in their work.
Our topic this half term has been “Oceans and Seas,” and the children have loved exploring this theme across the curriculum. In Science, we learnt all about sea animals and their habitats. In Geography, we investigated the oceans of the world, and in History we tracked the adventures of Christopher Columbus. In Art, the children created incredible shoebox dioramas of underwater habitats, alongside fantastic clay sea creatures which really showcased their creativity and imagination.
In PE, we have been very lucky to work with Nicola from Leeds Rhinos, who has been teaching the children dance and movement skills linked to our Oceans and Seas topic. The final performance was amazing, and we were so proud of every single child. They listened beautifully, took part with enthusiasm and performed with such confidence and energy.
Another huge focus this half term has been the children completing their “special work” (SATs). Watching the children persevere, thrive and tackle every challenge with smiles on their faces has been such a wonderful experience for me as a teacher. We could not be prouder of them. In fact, many of the children were upset when it was all over, which really is a testament to their incredible attitudes, resilience and positivity. They approached every task with determination and maturity, and they should all feel extremely proud of themselves.
As we head into the holidays, we hope you all have a lovely break and take some time to relax and recharge. We are very excited for our final half term together, which promises lots more exciting memories — including our Year 2 Leavers’ Assembly, where we will celebrate the many achievements of our wonderful children.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. It really does make such a difference, and we are so grateful to work alongside such supportive families.
Best wishes,
Mrs Sharp and the Year 2 team
