Reception Summer Term 1 Blog
Date: 22nd May 2026 @ 3:26pm
Well what a busy half term we have had!
In between the copious amounts of rain (thank you for helping us deal with all the wet clothes and shoes) we have watched the children grow in both confidence and ability.
This term we have been learning about the life cycles of ladybirds, frogs, spiders and butterflies. We now feel we are ready for next term when we will actually watch real caterpillars turn into butterflies – we are very excited!
In maths we have been looking at maths in nature and learning that symmetry can be found everywhere. We learnt how to make symmetrical butterflies, have been continuing to practise our ‘learn its (we need to know them as quickly as we know our name) and have been learning to apply these skills. If we know 4 +4 is 8 then we know 4 billlion + 4 billion is 8 billion… We are loving big numbers!
We have continued our adding and subtracting skills and this week have taken our first look at multiplication, learning that the sign ‘x’ means lots of /groups of and have been making these numbers sentences brilliantly with cubes and counters. We are so proud of how confidently the children have been using their mathematical vocabulary.
The children are continuing to impress us with their phonics, reading and writing skills. We have nearly introduced all the sounds and red words for the Reception year so now is the opportunity to keep practising them so that the children are ready for Year 1. It has been a joy watching the children write on the whiteboard as they play teachers, labels their ‘baddies’ on their outstanding junk models and name their animals in the construction built animal pens.
We’ve also been learning how to keep healthy with our hand washing and teeth cleaning workshops and we have been impressed at how seriously they are reminding each other about the process of hand washing properly!
Well done Reception, you have worked so hard this term and we are so proud of you.
Have a lovely break and see you next term.
Thank you for your continued support – the Reception team.
